The greatest mansion of the Dwarves, delved by Durin beneath the Misty Mountains. The Balrog killed Durin VI in T.A. 1980 and Náin I in 1981, after which the Dwarves fled. Balin briefly recolonised it in 2989–2994. It is a haunt of Orcs and worse when the Fellowship crosses it in 3019.

2. TA 1980 — The Dwarves awaken a Balrog; Durin VI is slain.

4. TA 2989 — Balin leads Dwarves to recolonise Moria.
5. TA 2994 — Balin's colony is destroyed by Orcs.
6. TA 3019 — The Fellowship of the Ring passes through Moria; Gandalf falls fighting the Balrog.
